What is Swimming Pool Entrapment?
Swimming pool entrapment is when someone becomes stuck to one of the pools outlet fittings, most commonly on the main drain. However people can also get stuck on skimmer and vacuum point fittings also.
This happens when the suction on one of the fittings is too great. When someone has been pulled onto one of the fittings the level of suction can be too strong for a person to be able free themselves. This can cause drowning if the person trapped can not escape, or if they do manage to escape there can be serious or even life-threatening damage from the injuries.
Children and people with long hair are more prone to becoming entrapped within a swimming pool.
Children have a tendency to play with pool fitting and it does not require the same amount of force to entrap a child as it does an adult.
People with long hair can be dawn into outlet fittings that can cause a very high level of suction to develop – pulling the swimmer into the fitting and causing them to be unable to release themselves.
